A novel about Chess!

There is a novel that's just come out which has a very strong chess theme. It's called Crossword Ends in Violence (5), written by BBC comedy writer, James Cary. It's about the D-Day landings and the crossword controversy around it. But one of the main characters is a chess grandmaster (the former UK number 2) - in fact there are quite a few grandmasters in the book. And there's a fair amount of chess-talk in it. And ultimately, the whole novel is about the Soviets trying to get a World Chess Champion. And it's quite funny. There's a website where you can read all about it, including large extracts of the book - http://crosswordendsinviolence.wordpress.com/

"The Luzhin Defense" by Nabukov. Great chess novel, by great writer who also wrote some chess problems.

If you want a good novel that is strictly about chess get hold of Francis Parkinson Keyes' "The Chess Players" which is based on the life of Paul Morphy. I highly recommend it.
