The Three K's

Submitted by benws on Sun, 09/27/2009 at 6:31pm.

I would like to thank everyone who commented on my last blog post regarding whether or not I should buy MCO, 15th edition. Despite some loud cries that it is not at all useful, I still will probably buy it anyway. But I am currently trying to see if I can get a free alternative. Does anyone know of any chess books that can be read just for fun (an example is The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes)?

I just added another chess book to my collection, and am almost finished with my current revamping project. Oh, and my premium membership just ended on here. Perhaps I will renew it someday. Also, my 2 year anniversary on chess.com is coming up soon. And of course, I'm still pressuring the staff to listen to my great ideas. Cool

If you haven't heard about it already, Kasparov has just beaten Karpov in a 12 game 9-3 in a rapid/blitz match. Here is a game played by Kasparov in which he sacrifices his queen for two minor pieces, with entertaining results.

I love The King by Donner, but I don't know if it's still as great if you aren't Dutch.

that game was reallllly cool, but that was also in '94 apparently.  before Kramnik was super-good and when Kasparov couldnt do any wrong.  as far as non-chess chess books go i cannot comment...

I really like the book Van Perlo's Endgame Tactics, which is both educative and fun. It deals with (as the title says) tactics in endgames. Before I bought the book I wondered how one could find enough endgame tactics to fill a book with believable positions ("aren't most endgames just positional or straightforward wins/draws?") but the author easily manages to fill almost 500 pages with endgame tactics from real games, in lots of different types of positions.

But my plead should not be enough to convince you to buy a book :) instead, if you would like to know more about this book, just check out the reviews at ChessCafe.com (review ), JeremySilman.com (review ) and Amazon.com (reviews ), or check some sample pages here , and know that the book won the 2006 ECF Book of the Year award and also won the ChessCafe 2006 Book of the Year prize :)

And besides this book, I really liked The Berlin Wall by John Cox, which is (one of) the best opening book(s) I've ever seen. However, this is an opening book, and although it makes for a very interesting read, it may not really appeal to you if you don't play the Berlin Wall. Which you should though :)

have you read "Searching for Bobby Fischer"?  the book was way better than the movie.

I liked "King's Gambit" (Hoffmann?) much more than "King's of New York"

Bobby Fischer Goes to War: How the Soviets Lost the Most Extraordinary Chess Match of All Time

This one (above) looks interesting and the author did a stellar job on "Wittgenstein's Poker"

My recommendation for an enjoyable chess read is "Kings of New York - Michael Weinreb"
