This is MY blog. Give me a SINGLE reason why this blog is not adequate and I'll start a new one. I'm not asking for much...just ONE simple reason.

Here is just another one of my INFREQUENT blog postings.

First things first. Many people HATE when I capitalize certain words, and even refer to it as random capitalizations. HOGWASH. When you read one of my posts, the capital words should be read with FORCE and POWER. It means I am SERIOUS about those words and that they have more importance than the others.

I am making slow progress on updating my pride and joy chess program, CANNIBAL. I have done this 35 times before, so I know what I'm getting into to. It's in the beginning phases and nothing more than rewriting already existing code. Adding to it. Making it better. Next week, I will have two of my coworkers fiddle with the ITERATIVE DEEPENING and ALPHA-BETA PRUNING. These are just 10 dollar words used to describe a 1 dollar commodity. What this refers to is trimming the number of positions and responses that get evaluated in the overall process while choosing the best move based on the depth and time that I am giving the program.

Once again, I could just go out and plunk down $50 and buy myself Rybka or Hiarcs, but this is a hobby for me and my friends.

We continually test CANNIBAL throughout the updating process to see if what we are doing is helping it or hurting it. I will post these results occassionally  on this blog.

We test CANNIBAL against Chessmaster 10. We use many different time and depth settings, but I will post the results for just one time setting because it is a quick game (2 minute game) and yields many results.

As a benchmark, in 50-- 2 minute games with chessmaster BEFORE we began updating CANNIBAL, our record was 17 draws, 15 wins, and 18 losses for a score of 23.5-26.5. This is only ONE of the many times and/or depths we use, so it really doesn't reflect the ENTIRE ability of the program--but it is a good approximation.

I look forward to testing it out again on the entire chess.com pool of cheaters this fall.

 

I'm going to keep this short and sweet....if there is anyone out there even reading this. The vote chess game was LOST by me and WON by team chess.com. I could sit here and make excuses all day long, but the bottom line is that I got a mark in the loss column and they got the win. END OF STORY.

The game lived up to the hype I generated UNTIL my last move.....number 35. Here is what the vote chess game would be like if it were called as a boxing match:

ROUND 1: Cheater_1 breaks the nose of chess.com and the blood is flowing.

ROUND 2: Cheater_1 breaks the jaw of chess.com but chess.com finds the strength to battle on.

ROUND 3- ROUND24: An evenly matched fight with both sides gaining no advantage over the other.

ROUND 25: Cheater knows this fight is going to the judges and since he has both rounds 1 and 2 in his favor, he will win the fight (in this chess game, a DRAW is a win for me). Cheater_1 lets his guard down in the final 3 seconds and is caught with a HUGE roundhouse right and goes down in a heap. He manages to get to his feet and during the standing 8 count, is given a TKO. Game over. LOSS. EPIC LOSS!!!

Team chess.com, sensing the brutal strength of its opponent, knowing full well that it stood no chance of winning this fight, knowing how it got manhandled right off the bat, and knowing that it owes a win SOLELY to a slip up by cheater_1 (it'll take the win anyway it can)--refuses to get into the ring again. Team chess.com retires as the undisputed heavyweight chess cheater of all time. 

That's how I see it.

I don't know how you can manage to play internet Chess so often.  I'm not trying to be insulting, so please don't misconstrue it as that, but don't you get bored???

God, after moving to Indiana I see practically no Chess players.  None!!  Can you imagine someone who has put countless hours and days into practicing Chess, playing OTB in state and even national tournaments, and getting taught by GMs would feel in a place with virtually NO CHESS??

It's driving me nuts, not being able to play OTB in a tournament setting!!  How do you manage without sneaking a quick 4 round local tournament in?! 

Hit your own grandmother with a 2 x 4 ?  You sound miserable.  Seek therapy.

AH, I havent blogged for a while, frankly I find the blogs too far removed from the action. Anyway, thanks to ERIK for allowing me to compete in the cheater_1 vs. chess.com game. You all know that I will decimate team chess.com. As I watch the events unfold of this game (on the 5th move) I am wringing my hands. It seems I got at least a few hundred people to sink to my depth--to actually use a computer program to BEAT someone else. There is an element of people here that despise me SO much that they will go to ANY ends to beat me. Do all you shortsighted DUNCES realize that that is why I turned to cheating. To silence the arrogant jackasses. Welcome to my world. It's kind of like getting an upstanding citizen who is SO against guns and capital punishment to go purchase a gun so he can SHOOT all the pro-gun ownership people who are for the death penalty that are marching on his street. A victory for me, as I see it.

I will make a prediction: when I go up +5, or even +3, the plug will get pulled on this game or something "fishy" will happen. Once again, a victory for me. I just don't see the ADMINISTRATORS allowing me to checkmate team chess.com. I will be civil in my win, but I will RANT endlessly. I will DOMINATE the forums in my arrogance. I'm sure I will get banned for you all will see me at my most arrogant and condescending. You all will get so sick of me that the administrators will have no choice to delete me. Now, if I lose, well, I'll cry foul and claim something illegal happened on team chess.com's part. Ill find something to vindicate me.

In my 6 months here (time sure flies) things have transpired EXACTLY as I have forseen. 99% people would hate me, but there would be that 1% that would "appear" to like me. I have gotten dozens of emails from people who want to know everything from how to cheat, to people who confessed to cheating, to people who will flood the votes with garbage moves to help me win. You, dear reader, may ask yourself why I am relating this, and I'll tell you. I have lived in the shadows for a loooooong time. Not many people out there know about the double life I have led. What good is it letting the secrets die? I now speak the truth about everything. I havent come to the light side, but seeing my competitive cheating days are over, I'd like to expose it ALL. I'm kind of like a magician who was blacklisted on the magician circuit in Las Vegas, who, out of revenge, exposes all the tricks and ruins it for EVERYONE.

Man, I'm glad that I have a good head on my shoulders cuz Id be dangerous if I ever snapped. After 30 years of chess I still cant break 1900, so Im gonna take it out on every single chess player I see, especially the GOOD ones. Sure, Im jealous of the 14 year old GM. Sure Id like to slash his bicycle tires and steal his ivory chess set. Yes I'll resort to cheating a GM just to belittle him infront of a crowd. I have paid my dues playing chess for 3 decades and I still cant last 30 moves with FRITZ. Im angry. Im frustrated and you all are the recipient. Some people take an AK47 to the mall and blast 30 innocents. My weapon of choice is FRITZ.

Well, I ramble on. As I look at my chessboard that I set up that mimics the cheater_1 vs. chess.com board, I can see you're ALREADY in trouble. You're a piece down have lost the advantage that white initially gets. Step it up, dont embarrass yourselves team chess.com. I will be MERCILESS in my VICTORY speech.

Why are you replying to unasked questions? Why are you blogging, trolling and seeking attention from a community of players who you, considering your "misanthropic character", probably disrespect? Like a little boy seeking attention by jerking the girl's plaits....

There are at least 2 sides to every story. There are consequently at least two different ways to view anything in life. The way we view things is dependent on our point of view--where we are in relation to what's going on.                         

There are 2 types of golf, regulation and mini golf--both use a club to hit a ball into a hole with the fewest strokes winning. There is regulation chess and speed chess. Both are chess, but with different time rules and different styles used to excel in each game. There is another variation called internet chess.

Allow me to make the comparison: Regulation tennis is played with a real racquet and ball on a real court with real people. Tennis on the Playstation is played on a television with "virtual" everything. Both forms of tennis have the same basic rules, both have the same results, but they are played in 2 ENTIRELY different ways. Chess has the same qualities. There is OTB chess, correspondence, and online. All are chess and have the same set of rules, but they are played in MUCH different ways.

I reside in the ONLINE world of chess. That's my world. Just as there is NO rules that say you can't nudge your golf ball a few inches to improve your position in mini golf, there is no rule that says it is forbidden to consult a program when playing online chess. Show me where it is written, people. You are in MY world when you play me on the web. You are forced to abide by the rules I set forth when I choose to play. You have no choice. As long as I move my horsey the correct way or perform the en passant correctly, I can play. Do I make myself clear? OTB is your world, online is MY WORLD. Get used to it.

Let me give you some defintions: LAW....A rule established by authority, society, or customs. RULE....An authoritative direction for conduct. ETHICS...A principle of right or good conduct. Ethics say that if a person drops a $10 bill, I should pick it up and return it to them. Law says that I CANNOT stick a knife in their back and TAKE their $10. "Law" forbids me to consult a chess program when playing in a USCF tourney. Ethics say that I should make all my moves using my brain when playing online chess. Am I getting through? Hello? I am not forbidden to consult Chessmaster when I play you in online chess. I am violating a code of ethics, to be sure, but I will not get the same punishment as if I consulted a handheld blackjack computer while playing in Las Vegas.

Allow me to make a final comparison. Online chess compares to OTB chess as...... mini golf compares to the PGA....Madden 08 football for the PS2 compares to the Superbowl.....Driving your Lamborghini at 250 to escape the cops in Need For Speed compares to getting a ticket for driving 75 mph in a 55 mph zone in your Volkswagen. One is fantasy, the other is reality. The World Wide Web is a fantasy world where everyone woman is 36-24-36 and every man is a successful businessman pulling in 6 figures a year. Online chess is not REAL CHESS.

Here, in my online fantasy world, I am a CHESS GOD. I am infinitely better than all of you--and I always will be. I choose to exist here in digital form. Here is where I have my power. I have no power outside this realm and therefore do not exist outside this thing called the internet. I am not flesh and blood. I am a fictional character called "cheater_1". 

Here, I am GOD. 

Well boys and girls, here is my Christmas present to you. I'm sure many of you wondered about my chess ability (or lack thereof) and wondered how you would do in an OTB game with me. Well, if you have the chess program Chessmaster, I have the settings of a character I created that is a virtual ME. If you have CM, please create a custom character with these setting and play a MINIMUM of a 1 hour game (30 minutes per side) with it. That's getting close to what REAL CHESS is. No beat the clock or mouse races. Thinking. Strategy. Tactics. I'm guessing its strength is about 1850-1900 USCF which would put it somewhere in the low to mid Class A.

Opening Book: GAMBIT

STYLE:

Attacker/Defender -50,  Strength 56, Randomness 50, Depth 99, Selective 6, Contempt 5, Transposition 1, Pondering on.

POSITIONAL:

Material/Position -50, Center 100, Mobility 100, King Safety 140, Passed Pawn 150, Pawn weakness 100.

MATERIAL:

Queen Own/Opposition 9/9, Rook Own/Opposition 5/5, Bishop Own/Opposition 3.5/3, Knight Own/Opposition 3/3.5, Pawn Own/Opposition 1/1.

There you have it. Plug these values in, name the personality "cheater_1", and play a MINIMUM of 30 minutes per side. Drop me a line and let me know how you do.

 

You know, many people who have responded to my posts in the forums have hit the nail on the head with their take on who I am. At the height of my cheating on POGO, I did have an empty, pathetic life. I once drove over one hundred miles just to get an advance copy of Chessmaster8000. After I installed it on my computer, I think I had a marathon 24 hours cheating session online. Also, I'd set up round robin tournaments with all the chessmaster personalities to see the strongest one minute player. These tournaments would last all day and night. I'd reconfigure some of the personalities, tweaking their traits such as overvaluing the bishops to 4 points to see how they'd preform. God, I must have spent thousands of hours doing that. Then I'd pit that Chessmaster personality against Fritz, Chess Tiger, Rebel Tiger, Hiarcs, etc. and come up with the single best settings for a one minute player. I'd then take my new found CHESS GOD onto the internet and watch it murder other players. I took great joy in "giving life" to a chess character and unleashing him on the free world. You see people, I love chess programs more than many things in life. I have even written several. The one I wrote with the help of a few friends actually plays at a strength of around 1950. Granted, we cannibalized parts of other chess software, but tweaked it to be quite aggressive. I consider myself a programmer first and then a lover of chess. So you can see why I love to use programs so much. It's not that I want to beat you up just because I can--that's too easy. I like a challenge. If some person came onto a site and said he was using RYBKA, I'd drop everything and be first in line to play him. Prog vs. Prog: what can be more fun? Well, for my next post I have a treat instore for some of you who have the program Chessmaster. I will give you the settings of a custom character who VERY CLOSELY emulates my style and strength of play. It is so close to my actual, real life play, that I usually draw it or have a very very close game. Merry Christmas!

Please understand, people, that I am NOT promoting or condoning cheating at chess. I am presenting my personal experiences and the UGLY reality that accompanies cheating at chess. I am fully aware that in the grand scheme of things, it is wrong. I acknowledge that it is dirty. But I compare it to breaking the speed limit in your car. It is both wrong and fun. Besides, it is also victimless. Trust me, if you got cheated during an internet chess game by me, you would never know it because I NEVER admitted to using a chess program unless it was a prearranged prog vs. prog match. Trust me again when I say that you would not feel victimized by your loss; if you did, then stop playing chess and take up sewing.

I don't even remember how I first learned to play the game other than my older cousin had a chess set and we just sort of moved the pieces around, not really knowing how the horsey moved, but having fun. Somehow I learned the proper way to play as time went by. Enter the home computer, most notably, the Commodore 64 in 1982, I think. I had some old chess program called SARGON that I played regularly on one of our computers and that's when I really took a liking to chess and drastically improved my game. You can only beat your little sister so much that it becomes boring (beating in chess, that is). Conversely, you can only get beaten by your older cousin so much until you get discouraged. 

Our household had 2 personal computers in the 80s, a Commodore 64 downstairs and a Packard-Bell upstairs. I had then amassed a bunch of computer chess programs and would pit them against each other to see which one was the best at short games and which one was the best at long games. The problem was that because Chessmaster 2000 was upstairs and Battlechess was downstairs, I'd have to run back and forth after each move. I got my exercise that's for sure. That was the beginning of my fascination with chess programs and the competition between them.

A little bit about me: I am 42 years old, never married, no children, from a midwestern state in the good old USA. I have a 4 year degree from a major university and am employed in the IT field. I live life according to my terms and have made many many mistakes so far. I am willing to pay whatever price (not necessarily monetary) to get what I want. I am very selfish, have a sense of entitlement, and pretty much don't care about other people's feelings. The best single word that describes me is: misanthropic.

I have been playing chess since I was about 10 or 12 years old--at least 30 years. You would think that I'm a fabulous player, but I'm far from it. I have never taken to intense study of the game, but own many books and chess programs and just play for enjoyment. Just as the guys who go out for a friendly weekend game of golf a few times a month never aspire to compete in the PGA, so it is with me and chess.
