Chess Variation

I like to experiment with Chess and thus far have created this variation on it. This is the first I feel is fairly different yet retains the Chess qualities that make it such a great game. Mainly its simplicity to learn and difficulty to master.

The variation, that I have yet to name fully so will for now be called CataChess, uses a new piece and a 10x10 board. The new piece as suggested by the name is a catapult. I know the catapult isn't a unique addition, but the way it moves I beleive to be unique. At least, as much as it can.

The above board shows its set up. The reason for the 10x10 board instead of variated 8x8 board becomes clear with the movement and attack (mainly attack) of the Catapult. (I'll be using C for notation to represent the Catapult).

Movement: It moves in the same way as the King, one square in any direction.

Attack: Now this is where it becomes different. Most pieces attack the same way they move (with exception to the Pawn). Not the case here, its attack is along the ranks and files only, no diagonals. Also, it can not attack the square adjacent to it. Its attack range is therefore 2-3 squares away from it. This gives it a total of 8 attack squares. This includes jumping over friend and enemies just like the Knight.

The last part is why its played on a 10x10 board. If it was any smaller the attack of the Catapult could easily break any line to easily.

Well, that's my variation on Chess, hope you like it and have fun playing it if you can make the extra pieces and the board!

It is a fun variation.  Hard to master I think.

It would be a slower game yes (longer distance, more pieces, ect.) but I was going for something harder. More possible moves with a larger board. A new piece to master. Just the possibilities of the variation. Though I still love traditional Chess ;)

I am working on a program right now for my variation, it'll hopefully include check/legal move checking, along with saving, loading games, saving to pgn format (modified for the additional piece and board) and more.

Try switching bishops and rooks around. It's just as hard.

gud work, i appreciate ur creativity. but i guess the traditional chess would be a much faster game n one can focus better on the normal board than this one....
