hmmm openings... there r many. it also depends on the style of the player. you get yourself familiar with the e4 and d4 openings as white, which r the most popular. e4 openings as white... there is Roy Lopez e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Bb5 a6 and then there r many variations to it and there r other opening to which black can respond as French e4 e6... and there is Sicilian . as black you should look at more solid and defensive openings, since u r a beginer something like (French, caro-can defense) and if you want to study the opening so deeply you should go to  

http://www.chessgames.com/ and there on the botom right hand side of the site u will see  the "opening explorer" tab, try it out! it helps. also there are many annotated games in there on the site, watch them and read the annotations and try to make sense on them, you will learn alot.
