Chess.com-Four Years

My fourth anniversary on chess.com has come and gone. I still can't believe how quickly this site has changed. Last year, chess.com had a "mere" 2.5 million members. Today, it has over 4 million! It's simply astonishing. In additon, we've seen the release of so many new features. Live chess tournaments are soon coming; a year ago, the staff insisted that they would never arrive. This shows just how the future is limitless for chess.com. The site has grown more and more in popularity. I expect to see more vote chess against grandmasters and more attention throughout the Internet.

As for me, unfortunately, I haven't had that much time to play chess lately. It's my junior year of high school, and the workload is enormous. In addition, I have some sad news- I used to attend a chess club at a local Borders every Thursday. It closed last month, due to Borders going out of business. No word on whether or not it'll be resurrected. I have a feeling that it will, sometime in the next few months. In the meantime, my school's chess club will have to do.

Anyway, I wish erik (btw, congrats on exercise.com!), Patzer24, and the rest of the staff the best of luck in the future. I plan to stick around on this site as long as I can. I hope that many great things will happen in the following year, and that I will be there to see them happen!

Lol they aren't going to charge all members just to cut down on the numbers they show. Would you rather join a site with 4 million members or a site with 100,000 members? Also, chess.com earns from ads they show aswell as the subscriptions from premium members so they have a nice and steady income...

Witnessing the transition can be fascinating for those of us who saw it at the start, back in 2007. I empathise with the way the change of chess.com can show us our own passage of time.

i wonder what % of the 4 million pay a monthly subscription? if  even only 50% do thats an awful lot of money. one has to assume  Erik is by now  a millionaire? or am i wrong?

You are an idiot. A site about chess, and you have to pay 5$ just to join? In my country, you can buy 15 breads with that money.

I doubt the membership numbers!  I suspect this is made up of members with multiple accounts in their names.

Because if there are 4 million members; how come only a few thousand online at any given time?

Just to verify this; I request the staff of Chess.com to request all members to contribute $5 to Chess.com as a "membership confirmation fee" and the accounts that do not pay this "confirmation fee" be deleted with a cut off date given; probably by 31st December 2011.

I am ready for this contribution!

This will give the real membership figures by Jan 1 2012. Have few numbers; but good numbers.

Wish Chess.com all the best in times to come!
