Down here in the south of France

Submitted by cath on Wed, 09/19/2007 at 3:57pm.

I live near Avignon in France. I worked for (probably too many) years with university libraries around the world, in academic bookselling - ordinary books and electronic books. Also worked on a huge number of educational projects for developing countries. And for an NGO, making electronic information available to African researchers and overhauling African library systems (funded by the Scandinavians and Carnegie respectively). Since 2001, I worked with a couple of US corporations, one in New Hampshire, one in Tennessee. Am still working for the latter but have scaled down to spend more time seeing friends, enjoying France - which is a fabulous country; everyone knows that, right? - meeting new people, reading books and playing chess. If you want a game - let me know....

Hi Cath,

I just read your notes.  Sorry for being so late in replying.  Chess is such a wonderful game and I am so glad you enjoy it.  I learnt chess when I was 14 and took to it like duck to water but then I started working and quickly forgot chess.  Now that I am back to being a student I have started playing again.  chess.com is a boon for folks like us.  As a student I am surrounded by 20 somethings and that does get on my nerves sometimes.  So it was a relief to meet someone closer my age :-)

My name is Amitava and Deshmukh is my family name and I am usually called Amitava or Amit.  In chess.com people call me Adesh and that is fine too.  What's in a name!

I am going to be in France till December and then I am back in India.  If you ever plan a visit to India do let me know.  I consider myself something of an expert on that chaotic country :-)  If you love Indian cuisine you must visit India.  And then there is of course the Taj Mahal and the palaces of Rajasthan, the beaches of Goa, the temples of South India and I haven't even mentioned the Himalayas!  One country, many reasons!

Hi Cath,

One of the main reasons we should become friends is that I am the same age as you!  I quit my job as a Bank Manager in India and came to Pau to do an Executive MBA offered by Stockholm University through Pau Business School.  This gives me a chance to live in France and work on my French.  I read a bit, travel a bit and love making new friends.  My email id is adeshmukh@india.com.  If you are coming to Pau I can cook an awesome Indian chicken curry for you!

Best,

Amitava

Hi Cath - Wow!  What an interesting career.  We have a little parity in that I own an online school focusing on the creative arts.  Did spend a bit of time in publishing in a former life (one of many) - always liked that business!  France is awesome, of course...
