Endgames

Not sure if anyone else agrees, but I reckon endgames are the most fascinating part of chess. I have been studying them for about 35 years, and they still manage to surprise me!

One of my favourites has got to be this one:

    Sorry - mis-typed - should have been Qg8 not Qb8 - I have corrected it.

    Qxa4 would not be any better - it still loses the queen to Be8+

    I don't understad. How can the queen go from a2 to b8, and wouldn't qxa4 be better? Please explain!

    Yes - a lovely position! Ra8 Qa2 Rxa4 Qg8 and then Ra8 a second time - lots of very simple tactics and neat finish - I have found hundreds of these things in books on endgame studies.

    Nice one! 1. Ra8 leads to loss of the black Queen in all cases I think?
