Fischer v. Stein 1967

Submitted by boilermaker1234 on Mon, 04/06/2009 at 5:03pm.

In the 1967 Interzonal, Bobby Fischer faced Leonid Stein, perhaps one of the greatest unsung chess geniuses. Stein died in 1973 at the young age of 37.

Note Bobby's comments after move 26.

Fischer: "At this stage the power failed. In the dark I began

to worry about 26..N-Q6! (if 27.R-Q1 NxB! and White has

nothing). Then the lights came on again and I saw clearly

that 26..N-Q6? was crushed by 27.BxN! QxB 28.B-N5!"

and White penetrates decisively on the weak dark squares.

Tim, I think a diagram is good here; I put it here...

Precise game from Fischer.  I think he's the greatest chess player of all time... Smile
