Fun in the Hyperaccelerated Dragon

Submitted by Phobetor on Thu, 10/01/2009 at 2:09pm.

Below is just a fun game I played today. Besides the annotations to the moves, there's not much else to say about the game other than that it was a tactical mess...

Again, I didn't double-check all my annotations with an engine, so engines may not agree with everything I wrote here. But at least it's a fun game to play through! Enjoy :)

Yes MiamiTactics, this game looks very much like the game above. However, Blas Lugo found the correct 13. Ke2 which I didn't play. But that's hardly surprising, since the game above is a 5/0 game, while that other game is a game between a 2400 and 2500 player at a long time control.

Phobetor, much appreciation for such a great informative game, and double the appreciation for the reason that Mehdipiero mentioned.

Mehdipiero, I am not familiar with that variation. At first sight I would say that the Qa4-Qe4 variation has the advantage of not giving black any space for the moment. If Nd5-c7 or Nd5-b6, I can follow up with Bf4 when black cannot get d7-d5 in so easily. In your variation, black does get to play d7-d5 (even with a tempo). So I would say 'my' variation has an advantage as well, but since I never played your variation I can't say which variation is better :)

really cool game full of fireworks! i admire your "bravery", there are few people out there who wouldn't mind to show their losses for the sake of benefit to others...Thanks.

And one question I had, isn't Qc4 d5, Qh4 idea better or more viable? than the one you played? you know black would play Ne4 or Nd7 after that and it's also theory.

Smokinghole, you're right. 5... g6 is the Dragon, 4... g6 is the Accelerated Dragon and 2... g6 is the Hyper-accelerated Dragon. My mistake.

lubo, it was an online game on ICC (like many others in my blog) played at the 5/0 blitz time control.

And feyterman, actually the Qxd4-Qa4-Qe4-variation is all 'theory', as far as you can call a variation in the Hyperaccelerated Dragon theory. The first queen move (Qxd4) tries to disrupt black's development. The second (Qa4) is just a temporary relocation, since e4 is not available yet. And the third (Qe4) just places the queen in a better position while also gaining time on black's knight. White 'wastes' some tempos with his queen, but black has to move the g8-knight many times as well.
