In this game Alekhine demonstrated the case when the Pawn is stronger as the Queen. In the Hungarian language the names of chess pieces have two expressions – except the King. We have an official and a popular expression of chess pieces. Here I’ll describe these with the beginning of the official:

Pawn: foot-soldier, peasant

            gyalogos, paraszt

Knight: hussar, horse

            huszár, ló

Queen: leader, queen

            vezér, királynő

Bishop: messenger, rifleman (by Maróczy)

            futár, lövész

Rook: bastion, tower (by Maróczy)

            bástya, torony

By the way, we could say in this game that the peasant was stronger as the leader or the foot-soldier was more estimable person as the queen. It will be obvious in the next game by analyzing of Alekhine.

Here is the painting of Cara Hollingsworth: Small Pawn Could Not Capture the QUEEN

But the Giant Pawn Could!

In every variant the f7-pawn seems stronger as the Black Queen. Here is four variant:

I. 20… Qb8 21.Nc6 Be5 (if 21… Qb7 then 22.Nxd8) 22.Bxe5 dxe5 23.Nxb8 Rxb8 24.Nc7! Rf8 25.Ne6 and next 26.Nxf8 and 27.Rd8.

II. 20… Qa7 21.Nc6 Be5 22.Bxe5 dxe5 23.Nxa7 Rxa7 24.Nxb6 Rf8 25.Nxc8 Rxc8 26.Rxd7.

III. 20… Qb7 21.Ne6 Be5 22.Nxd8.

IV. 20… Qc5 21.Ne6 Be5 22.Bxe5 dxe5 23.Nxc5 bxc5 24.Nc7 Rb8 25.Ne8!

Thanks for the explanation, cgs.  That helps a lot - I was too focused on promoting the pawn.

This is a very good question purpleguy. It's right that white can't promote the pawn but the pawn on f7 said to be a great advantage because it doesn't allows move the black king and threats to move on f8 ever. It seems if the black queen remains on c7. (If not, you could see I.-IV. analyzing)

For example if black moves 20... Be5. next 21.Nxc7 and here is three variant:

    A.) 21... Bxd4 22.Rxd4 Bb7 (if Ra7 then 23.Ne8!) 23.Rxd6 Nf8 24.Ne8! (threats the mate on g7 because of Giant f7-Pawn) Rxe8 25.fxe8Q Rxe8 26.Rf7 and threats again Rxg7+ what black couldn't defend.

    B.) 21... Bb7 22.Nde6! Bxb2 23.Nxd8 Rxd8 24.Rxd6 Rf8 25.Rxd7 h6 26.Ne6 and remained the Giant f7-Pawn.

    c.) 21... Ra7 22.Nce6! Rf8 23.Nc6! Ra8 24.Nxf8 Nxf8 25.Bxe5 dxe5 26.Rd8 and remained the unpleasant Giant f7-Pawn.

What am I missing?  White can't promote the pawn, because F8 is covered by a black rook and black knight, and white has only the rook on F1 supporting F8.  So why is the pawn on F7 said to be a great advantage?

    Thanks.
