I got a comment to my Japanese blog that why chess has not become so popular in Japan is based on the fact that you cannot mate your opponents' King in many cases in chess. I think it has a good point. In shogi, almost all games, let's say more than 95% games are decided by mate or resignation of foreseeing the mating line. In chess, to my experience, it's often decided by which player to promote its pawn to a queen. In shogi, winning a game is nearly equal to mate your opponents' King. It's a reality.

I think mating pattern of shogi is much more than that of chess and it can be appplicable much more often in actual games.
