How should I feel?

Submitted by chessdadx2 on Wed, 05/21/2008 at 7:09pm.

I just recently won my 50th game, and also lost my hundredth. I wonder if I should congratulate myself, or scold myself. Congratulate myself because I have reched a personal milestone. Or be disappointed that I allowed my self to be beaten 100 times. I am not in any way taking anything away from the opponents who bested me. I take my hat off to them, and their play. But I wonder if I  had taken a little more time with my moves and been a little less impatient would I have maybe 60 wins , 70 wins? It ultimately doesn't matter, because it is not about the win column for me. I finally found something I just enjoy doing, win or lose, good play or bad play. For me it's about the friends I make and the experiences I take away every night. It's about the things I learn from the people I meet, the growing, both in game and out of game. Realizing that this wonderful game relates to so many aspects of our lives. I am grateful for the whole chess.com community, and the experiences I have gotten from it.

I agree with likesforests friend.  Celebrate your win milestones as well as games played, and do not worry about the number of losses.  Most importantly just enjoy the game, and the self satisfaction that it will bring to you.

I have a friend who firmly believes losing more games than you win is the mark of an improving player, because that means you're regularly playing stronger opponents who have something to teach you (assuming you analyze your games afterwards).

Well, so long as you're a chess player, you will face losses. So why not simply celebrate coming to know this beautiful game that much more? Give it time, I'm in my first year, 500 games or so, whatever, it's all good. You're taking more away that you think.

Be glad with yourself at your tenacity. You clearly care about it enough to beat yourself up a bit, that's commendable.

Cheers and good luck!
