How to Teach Chess to Children

Submitted by Priansyah_46 on Thu, 10/02/2008 at 8:05pm.

One of the most wonderful things about chess is that you can play as challenging a game with an eight-year-old child, as you can with an 80 year old senior citizen. As a matter of fact, there have been children in their teens who have reached the highest level of chess and been crowned grandmasters of the game. You can teach the children you know a game that will bring them joy throughout their lives, as long as you have patience and a good working knowledge of the game.

Coaching is a joy. The 22 middle school students that I coach have had quite a year. They won for the first time in school history, the county chess championship. I am very proud of them.

My 8 years old daughter wants to learn playing, but it is anoying to be telling her how to move each peace and why; on the other hand, she won't sit to learn from computer tutors; could you tell me a sequence of training steps or simple games to hold her interest while teaching her the basics?

Hello,

You are absolutely right. I remember when my father shown me simple rules of chess when I was five years old. It helped me to concentrate myself and how to become more patience in my life.

You are young. May I ask you if you are already a mother? I had two boys, 6 and 2 years old.

Best regards,

Albatros
