I'm an 1100 player

What does your rating reflect?  So many people think of their rating as "points", and get upset if they win or lose "points".  I think your rating is sort of like an indication of your growth (as a Chess player in this case) and is kind of like the rings in a tree.

I play World of Warcraft (abbreviated WoW) as well as Chess, and in WoW, there are arenas where you can duel other players.  There are two points systems there.  One system, you get some amount of points whether you win or lose.  You get more if you win, but you'll get something just for playing.  There is also a system of team-based arenas, which is taken more seriously.  In the team-based arenas, you have a ranking that goes up or down based on your team's record.  There is also a personal ranking.  What is very different from the other systems is that points are assigned once a week, based on your ranking.  You also have to play a minimum of 10 games that week to get your weekly points.  Teams often stop playing at 10 games because they did poorly and don't want to "lose" points, but they are then compelled to play next week, or not get any points.  I like this system.

How many Chess.com players would play in an arena system?  I think it would be fun, but Chess has never really had something like it.  It would take an adjustment in how the casual player views their personal growth.  Some players would welcome the challenge, while I think others would shy away.  In the meantime, we have our conventional system, with no "points" to ponder, and hopefully everyone gets a little better every day.

As for me, I'm an 1100 player. Smile

Odd that this ended up as a comment to my blog.  Janus, if you read this, I think the book you're looking for is  "My System", by Aron Nimzowitsch.  Other than that, I can't think of anything that's refered to as "the Russian system".Here are some openings with the word “Russian” in them, with their associated ECO codes, and any of them could be considered a “Russian system”:

A44 Blockade Variation; Semi-Benoni; Russian Variation             1.d4 c5 2.d5 e5 3.e4 d6

C42 Petroff Defense; Russian Defense; C42            1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

C42 Russian Three Knights Var, Petroff           1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3

C79 Russian Defense, Ruy Lopez; C79; Lasker Defense     1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O d6

D27 Russian Gambit, QGA        1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 e6 5.Bxc4 c5 6.O-O a6 7.e4

D81 Accelerated Russian Variation, Grunfeld; D81      1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Qb3

D96 Russian Variation, Grunfeld; D96           1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3

* Especially D96, D97, D98 and D99.  They are all listed in CBL as "Grünfeld: Russian System"

funny , but unwittingly the tourneys act like that on my points ,i play lots of games and my points waver up and down but if i play badly and loose i`ve got to get playing again to try and get them up again , it seems to stabilize around 1450 so thats my tree ring at the moment , i need to study more to advance it.
