Well, the articles in this series seem to grow less frequent as time progresses, so I'll do one when I can.

In a few recent games of mine, I've encountered an opening pattern that can be seen from many different opening paths.

The main characteristics of the pattern are the sacrifice of the bishop on f7, the king takes, and the knight checks on g5 with an attack on e6.  Here's an example in a game of mine:

That was a basic opening example.  Sometimes the tactic happens a few moves later with more pieces developed.

I hope you enjoyed something from this article, and more importantly, learned from it!  If you have not joined, I encourage you to join Free Chess Help ( http://www.chess.com/groups/home/free-chess-help ) for more helpful resources.

Have a great day!

Come on, after 12...Kxf8 black is a bit better. White will be happy to gain equality. Let's see how the game continues.

I wouldn't say Bb3 is better per se but the second diagram... black has some compensation after b4.

No, black's position is better. BN vs RP is usually an advantage for BN. BN vs RPP is about equal.

After 9... Rxf7, 10. Ng5 Rf8 11. Ne6 would fork the queen and rook.  If black moves other than 10... Rf8, white simply takes the rook.  Sure, It's not a material advantage, but after Bh6 and Rad1 and Rfe1, white will have a strong attack and leave black with a partially exposed king.

In the second diagram, black has an advantage in the end and after 9...Rxf7! That's a bad example as 9.Bb3 is better.
