Here is the shortest game on record from Master tournament play, according to "The Golden Treasury of Chess" by Al Horowitz.

White has two choices: Losing his Queen or getting mated, he resigns. If you ever lost in such a fashion, don't feel bad, it happens to the best.

The reason why the Knight cannot be taken is: 5.fxe3 Qh4+, 6.g3 Qxg3 Mate.

as my 897 rating would suggest - I am missing something here - it is white's turn - why can't white move the pawn to e3 and capture the charging Knight? I am sure I will feel real stupid in a minute...but I am not seeing this...

if you count those games (1 move etc) then theres probably dozens of examples, but more notably, when white forfeits because the player never arrives/whatever reason, the game is over with 0 moves, but thats not really a game and neither is 1. c4/e4/etc. which is why I like this 4 move game.

This is my two favourite theme in four move. This two: Knight may catch the Queen and the Budapest Defense. There is a game in my blog "Hussar parade" where this two theme is into one game, but 9 moves with two Knight. This is faster! Bravo! This is a nice hit! Although the Budapest Defense here is a little limping. (instead of 2.c4 here is 2.Nd2) If not, then concerned to Gibaud as "Gibaud fault" if may be godfather.
