Let's Get It On!

Well, crunch time is here for me this year.   The two most important chess events for the year both start this week.

One is the Interclub matches where the clubs in South Australia compete for the pennant.  My club came very close last year - missed it by half a point.  Hopefully this year, we can do one point better!  Starts on Tuesday, 3rd May.

The other is the club championship, starting Friday, 6th May.  The title of club champion is up for grabs.  I've never won it, but always hope to do well.

I hope I don't 'choke' this year like I did last year.  I have been studying hard to try to improve my game for 10 months, hopefully it will pay off and I will do better than 50%.

Wish me and my club luck?!

Thanks for reading

Thanks Babsy... I am proud of the result, just still a bit disappointed that I didn't beat Bill and win it outright.  I will be for ages.

It is one of those things that drives me... so I wonder if it is a good thing or not.  If I had won it, I might lose that drive having achieved my goal of winning that championship and I would have nothing really to aim for... or would it inspire me to aim higher?!

Maybe next year... I will keep studying and see if it helps or not :-)

½ point would have given me a temporary equal first, to play off against the other equal firsts, so not a sure thing, but yeah, if I had of beat Bill, from the winning position I had, then I'd have won outright!

Yeah, I'll be kicking myself hard if I come ½ a point shy of winning the championship!

Tonight, the club championship was wrapped up.  My final game, against Alan, was a win.  I finished up with 6.5 / 9, just half a point clear of Edgar and Bill, with 7 points.  I placed 3rd.

This makes my loss against Bill even worse,... since I was winning it cleary out of the opening... if I had won that game I would have won the championship!  Bah!!

Still happy with the result though, finishing just half a point clear of 1st place is a comfort :-)

    Here is my final game:

I played my final round at Interclub tonight, finished with a win and my club made this result:

    A Grade:  2nd.

    B Grade: 1st.

I played for A and B grade -- we switched around a lot so that opponents couldn't prepare against us!

    Pretty good result!

I finished up with 56%.  5/9.  Could have done better, but nerves and stupid moves losing won games cost me plenty.

    Naughty Brad! xD
I like to use the analysis board on chess.com, but I'm trying to get out of the habit for the reason you just mentioned!

Sometimes, despite my logical refusal to do so, I spend waaay too much time on a physical analysis board thrashing out moves to try to find the best, but I shouldn't as it doesn't help my OTB game -- I NEED to abandon that practice and do all the calculations mentally so that my OTB game is helped.  Please tell me off!!

Oh wow, no wonder your rating is so high then, you put in the effort! :)

I often spend a day or two contemplating when it is critical and almost always an hour or two when it's not.

Oh okay, well you are still fairly high.

I usually spend about the same time and OTB chess, usually a minute or two. Depends on the position really. Longest I've ever spent was in a crucial position once and I checked my move over for about 40 mins. How about you?

My online rating is falling quite fast atm,.... that luck factor is balancing out.

How long do you spend on a move in OLC?

Oh okay, I just didn't expect the difference to be so great - I am rated about the same ACF, but your online rating kills mine xD

    1.  Massive differences between ACF and other rating systems.

    2.  Time -- online correspondence allows a LOT of time between moves.

    3.  Massive differences between OTB and Correspondence.

    4.  A genuine touch of luck.  I have won more than my fair share of games on time against stronger players who were killing me.

    5.  Database references.

Oh okay, nice effort. Your rating is quite different here at chess.com! Why's that do you think?
