9.Introduction to Tournament Rules.

In 2007,the Ncfp(National Chess Federation of The Philippines) issued an information regarding "new rules" to be included in the old existing rules in place. And this information supersedes old rules and in that year in recognizing that we implemented the said information of new rules not so strict that when violated the offenders gets a warning first and on the second offense we applied the penalty as is.titled as" Chess Supplementary Rules",

For the information of Team Captains and Coaches the following rules from FIDE shall be strictly observed during the tournament.

1.Cellphones must be shut off during the duration of the game of the player. If cellphone rings or a player appears to be using his cellphone or a player brought in the playing area a cellphone or any other means of electronic communication without the permission from the arbiter, penaltry is loat of the game by the erring player.

2.The following situations shall be treated as illegal moves hence for the first and second offense, two minutes extra time shall be added to the opponent each time and for the third offense lost of game by the erring player.

2.1 Capturing the King(Completed).

2.2 Stopping the clock without exchanging the pawn for a piece after promotion.

2.3 Using both hands in executing a move.

2.4 Displacing a piece/s without re-establishing it before stopping the clock. If the player displaces a piece after completing a move his opponent may restart the clock and let the erring player re-establish the displaced piece.

2.5 Using unnecessary force to oprating a chess clock ,including punching it with a piece.

8.Writing and Reading Chess(Descriptive and Algebraic Notation)

Algebraic Notation

It is very important to remember the (AN) has only one point of reference the white pieces.Algebraic Notation is the new and official way of writing chess.Like the scientific name of all species in latin, which has no exact duplication the AN offers just that,no duality in each 64 squares. Each square is distinctand unique no confusion on the moves and squares. All officers are designated in Capital Letters or upper case. Now let us go to the actual FIDE writings on Algebraic Notation(AN).

Topic E. Algebraic Notation

FIDE recognizes for its own tournaments and matches only one system of notation ,the Algebraic Notation and recommends the use of this uniform chess notation also for chess literature and periodicals.Scoresheet using a notation system other than algebraic may not be used as evidence in cases where normally the scoresheet of the player is used for that purpose. An arbiter who observes that a player is using any notation system other than the algebraic should warn the player in question of this requirement .

E1 . Each piece is indicated by the first letter,a capital letter,of its name Example: King = king, Q = queen, R = rook ,B = bishop, N = knight (in the case of knight, for sake of convenience,N is used)

E2 . For the first letter of the name of a piece, each player is free to use the first letter of the name which is commonly used in his country Examples: F = fou( for bishop), L = loper (Dutch for bishop). In printed publications, the use of figurines for the pieces is recommended.

E3 . Pawns are not indicated by their first letter, but are recognized by the absence of such a letter.Examples: e5,d4,a5.

E4 . The eight files( from left to right for White and from right to left for Black) are indicated by small letters,a b,c,d,e,f,g and h respectively.

E5 . The eight ranks( from bottom to top for White and top to bottom for BlacK) are numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,respectively.Consequently, in the initial position the white pices and pawns are placed on the first and second ranks; the black pieces and pawns on the eight and seventh ranks.

E6 . As a consequence of the previous rules, each of the sixty four squares is invariably indicated by a unique combination of a letter and a number.

E7 . Each move is indicated by ( a ) the letter first of the name of the piece in question and ( b) the square of arrival. There is no hyphen between ( a ) and ( b).EXAMPLES : Be5,Nf3,Rd1.In the case of pawns, only the square of arrival is indicated .Examples e5,d4,a5.

E 8 . When a piece makes a capture, an x is inserted between ( a )  the first letter of the name of the piece  in question and ( b) the square of arrival.Examples: Bxe5,Nxf3,Rxd1.When a pawn makes a capture, not only the square of arrival but also the file of departure must be indicated, followed by an x.Examples: dxe5,gxf3,axb5.In the case of "en passant" capture, the square of arrival is given as the square on which the capturing pawn finally rest and "e.p." is appendedto the notation.

E 9. If two identical pieces can move to the same square, the piece that is moved is indicated as follows,

( 1 )  If both pieces are on the same rank: by ( a ) the first letter of the name of the piece,( b)the file of departure, and ( c )the square of arrival.

( 2 )  If both pieces are on the same file: by ( a )The first letter of the name of the piece,( b)the rank of the square of departure, and ( c ) the square of arrival.

( 3 ) If the pieces are on different ranks and files , method ( 1 )  is preferred.In case of capture,an x must be inserted between ( b) and ( c ).

Examples:

( 1 ) There are two Knights,on the square g1 and d2,and one of them moves to the square f3: either Ngf3 and Ndf3, as the case maybe.

( 2 ) There are two Knights, on the squares g5 and g1,and and one of them moves to square f3: either N5f3 and or N1f3,as the case maybe.

( 3 ) There are two Knights on the squares h2 and d4,and one of them moves to the square f3: either Nhf3 or Ndf3,as the case maybe.

If the capture takes place onthe same square f3,the previous examples are change by the insertion of an x :either ( 1 ) Ngxf3 or Ndxf3, ( 2 ) N5xf3  or N1xf3,( 3 ) Nhxf3 or Ndxf3,as the case maybe.

E10. If two pawns can capture the same piece or pawn of the opponent, the pawn that is moved is indicated by (a) the letter of the file of the departure. (b) an x,(c) the square of arrival.Example.If there are white pawns on squares c4 and e4 and a black pawn  or pice on the square d5, the notation for White's move is either cxd5 or exd5,as the case maybe.

E11.  In the case of the promotion of a pawn, the actual pawn is indicated, followed immediately by the first letter of the new piece.Examples: d8Q,f8N,b1B,g1R.

Essential abbreviations

0-0     = castling with rook h1 or rook h8 (King-side castling)

0-0-0  = castling with rook a1 or rook a8 (Queen-side castling)

x        = captures

+       = check

++     = checkmate

e.p.  = captures*en passant*

Sample Game.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Bd2 0-0 5.e4 d5 6.exd5 exd5 7.cxd5 Bxc3 8.Bxc3 Nxd5 9.Nf3 b6 10.Qb3 Nxc3 11.bxc3 c5 12.Be2 cxd4 13.Nxd4 Re6 14.0-0 Nd7 15.a4 Nc5 16.Qb4 Bb7 17.a5 ...etc.

E12.   The offer of a draw shall be marked as(=). .

8.Writing and Reading Chess(Descriptive and Algebraic Notation)

*8.2 Descriptive Notation

At Diagram *8.2 we name The first bottom square occupied by the Rook as (QR1) express as Queen Rook One,next the second bottom square occupied by the Knight as(Qkt1) express as Queen Knight One,next the third bottom square occupied by the Bishop as (QB1) express as Queen Bishop One,fourth bottom square,(Q1) express as Queen One,fifth bottom square,(K1)express as King One,sixth bottom square (KB1) express as King Bishop One,seventh bottom square,(Kkt1) express as King Knight One and the last bottom or eight square (KR1) express as King Rook One.The same names are also applied if we make the Black the point of reference.Symbols are all First Upper case  letters of the name of all chess pieces except the Knight which is designated as "kt" so as not to be confused with the King which is designated as"K".K> King,Q> Queen,R> Rook ,B> Bishop,kt> Knight,P>Pawns.

The written move has basically two parts,The moved piece and the destination square.Example 1.P-K4 > The move piece is the Pawn and its destination square is K4(King's fourth square and white being the point of reference).1.P-K4 ,we read it or express it as "Pawn King Four".If the action of the pieces is capture.Example 2.PxP ,this means a Pawn captures a Pawn, we read it or express it as "Pawn takes Pawn".Another example,5....  KtxB,this means the Black Knight captures the white Bishop.we read it or express it as "Knight takes Bishop".Castling is designated as 0-0 or 0-0-0.The first castling symbol is castling short side or" Kingside" and the next castling symbol is castling longside or " Queenside".The check was represented as ch .Result of the game has three representation 1-0 means white won.Black won if it is 0-1,and draw is 1/2 - 1/2.

Now let us write some moves in (DN) Descriptive Notation.Let us write the shortest game possible. The Fool's Mate ,also known as Two moves mate .

White          Black

1.P-KB3       P-K3

2.P-Kkt4      Q-R5 checkmate

    0 - 1 Black wins .

Another very well known game almost every child wants to do with his opponent. The Scholar's Mate ,also known as Four Moves Mate , .

White            Black

1.P-K4           P-K4

2.B-B4           N-QB3

3.Q-R5           N-B3

4.QxP checkmate

     1 - 0 White wins .

8.Writing and Reading Chess(Descriptive and Algebraic Notation)

*8.1 Descriptive No

tatio n(DN)

Descriptive Notation is the old way of writing chess.Importance of old chessbooks that are written in this way are both precious and invaluable, aside from being Museum pieces and cost a lot, when originally signed by Great Grandmasters of old.

Here,we see an almost blank chessboard in Diagram*8.1 .We see two pieces of White and two pieces of Black. Those pieces are the Queen and the King.If we split the board equally in the middle separating the Queen and the King.We get two halves of the board.Starting from the middle left of Queen it is called the "Queenside" and from the other half of the board starting from the middle right of King it is called the "Kingside".The main difference of writing the Desciptive Notation is that it comes from two perspective or two point of reference.White starts from the bottom is designated as Rank 1 where the White King and Queen is located and going upwards counts as rank 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,and lastly Rank 8 where the Black King and Queen are located.Similarly or Vice versa making Black as the point of reference. The Top rank now becomes Rank 1 where Black King and Queen is located and we count going down rank 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and Rank 8 where the White King and Queen is.(to be continued)

5.Proper Board and Pieces Setting (Hard Facts and fix rule).

a .Light on the right.b .Queen wears the color of the army.c .En passant move.d .Promotion of pawn to any other officer ,except the King.e .Castling,Inrook or King's leap.

In arranging of pieces,Rook first,Knight second,Bishop third then apply Rule b .

Note:Arrangement of pieces or chessmen is based upon a social order.

The King and the Queen has bishops on their side.It is for counselling or consultation. After that they have the knights as body guards.Next to that is the rook or castle in which they live in or acts as fortress. And infront are the brave foot soldiers or pawns which protects the whole territory which is the half of the board.CT.

4.Introduction of Officers in chess >> Different roles, moves and values.

Officers are primarily all chessmen behind the pawns. The most important are significantly express by their height and stature. The King stands the tallest followed by the Queen.Bishops or counsellors,Knights and Rooks.Arrange via the Social order.

King>> moves 1 square only in all direction. .

Queen>> moves in all direction, vertical, horizontal and diagonal.

Rook>>moves vertical and horizontal only

Bishop>> moves in diagonal in one color only.

Knight>> moves in unique L shape fashion.

Note:The pawns move forward only and allowed two squares in its original square on the first move  and captures diagonally.Only Chess Officers can move backward for manuevering purposes.

Value in points>> King -0(priceless),Queen -9 points,Rooks -5 points each,Bishops- 3 points each,Knight-3 points each,pawns - 1 point each.

Here the last officer that i teach is the Knight.Somebody said that the genius of the game chess is the Knight move.I even cut- out  a L shape guide which the size is approximated to the official tournament size board,so that the first time learner does not over extend the Knight moves. And when he/she masters the knight moves,i give a test and give them a Knight Driving Certificate which they really treasure and enjoy.CT.

3.Lincolnshire Method(Pawn Game) >> "A Special Tribute"

'pawn power'is People Power

From a mere pawn that was promoted to become a deserving Queen!           Yet she ruled with honesty, with dignity, with all sincerety and a genuine love for the people her late husband"Ninoy"once said' was worth dying for.  Her living was amidst of trouble, disaster and struggle.Yet she shines like the The Bright Yellow Sun after a storm.

Th ought of to be frail and weak of form,Yet her inner strength exudes beyond her enemies wrong notion .From the more than 3 Million of Edsa Heroes that brave  and heeded the call to rise up and stand. She was the 1(one) highlighted beacon that the pages of History will forever shine ever bright.Generations after her willask.Who is this Lady, she is Cory the Mother of Philippine Democracy.

3.Lincolnshire Method(Pawn Game) >> Reference Book Nottingham,Wade, and lawrence.Replacing the people model with the Staunton model.

We introduce the"Lincolnshire Method" also known as the pawn game.It is very simple there are no complications.Don't teach the "en passant' just yet.Only in the actual game of real chess will that special move be taught.

This method began in the South Lincolnshire,England. It is a chess game that uses pawns only,no pieces or officers. The winner of this pawn game is the first to push a pawn to the far rank(8th rank). This Lincolnshire System is fast becoming the accepted way to teach people all over the world how to play chess.Even the Russian chess literature now has references to it.In my further studies, this system teaches children pawn structure or skeletons. Also the endgame which really is the battle to promote a queen. Then when the children learn the other moves of Officers,King,Quuen,Rook,Bishop and Knight. The real chess game is just like a pawn game with officers in it.Now, it is time for you to play the pawn game.CT.

2.People model of Chess >> Chess mimics or portrays life.

I have a chess set made out of people, before introducing the "Staunton Chessmen".I have seen an old movie"Quo Vadis" where the Roman officers plays chess with human faces. It is like the one seen in the Chessmaster 9000 introduction. In this type of chess set the children are very interested and even sets it up in correct order. If a foot soldier was arrange backward and his rifle points towards his officers they immediately resort to properly fixing it that all soldiers are facing front.Their you could inject or explain that the soldiers are brave, which is equivalent to our pawns, that is why they have no backward move only in front and diagonal when they clash with the opponent in captures.

Here I introduce the fact that the Chess we know as Staunton model was designed and created by Nathaniel Cook around 1835.A bit of Chess History. He registered his design in March 1849,and six months later it was recommended in the Illustrated London News by Howard Staunton(1810-1874).Chess champion of England and considered the unofficial world champion then.Although the patent expired 3 years later,Staunton allowed the phrase"genuine Staunton Chessmen" to continue to be included in each set.Now it became the standard chess set we use in our official tournaments worldwide.

Fact established:Only foot soldiers or pawns move forward and never backwards. It is because they are brave and not cowards nor traitors.Along with these chess facts ,I let them watch a portion of a movie, chapter 1 only,a true story;"Enemy at the Gates"The first part of the movie shows where Russian foot soldiers were ordered by their officers to attack German positions in Stalingrad,Russia.Chess mimics or depicts life.

Intro statement:

Everyone has to start zero knowledge of chess.I remember an international news report stating that for every 3 people in the world 1 knows chess or at least can recognize a chess set.during that time our world population reach the 6 Billion mark.So 1/3 of 6 Billion is 2 Billion. That report has reality in it,why, Asia has the Lion share of world population in the world. In only two countries alone as of now China(1.5 Billion) and India(1 Billion)A total of 2.5 Billion people. These two are chess loving nations and also a chess power in the world.

I have set -up 10 teaching modules which i find very effective in children learning chess for the first time.It is both study and play.

1.Picture or Painting >> Reference Book  A very colorful book by Im Michael Basman"Super Guides Chess" Children are drawn to lively colorful pictures.

A particular picture of a classic battle "The King and their Knights"King of England vs the King of France.I made that small picture into a larger one then framed it.I use that as an introductory tool to explain what chess is.

WHAT THE CHILDREN SEE AND NOTICE.

1.the battle axe

2.sword

3.spear

4.horses

5.the conflict

Purpose: To explain via Picture or Painting that chess in reality is war.(end of1)

Since my Chess Specialty in teaching chess is teaching Children as young as 4 years old.Remember they really have a very very short span of attention,if you fail to get in 30 minutes you failed. But if you dont, here are the benefits to their development.

In the Bible numerics 8 means a new beginning,we have 7 days and the next day, number 8 is a new beginning, same thing with the 7 musical notes,Starting with the lower Do,the eight note is the start of another set of octave the higher Do.

"8 Benefits of Chess to Child development "

1 .A child begins to learn rules

2.A child begins to recognize roles and functions

3.A child begins to know power and authority

4.A child begins to appreciate contrast

5.A child enhances his/her logic

6.a child begins to appreciate different geometric shapes

7.A child becomes intuitive and logical in learning to mate

8.A child learns to extracate himself/herself to difficult complicated situations.
