Mate in 4

Submitted by drd on Sun, 07/27/2008 at 12:14pm.

Below is a mate in 4 sketch that I used as a template for a longer problem I did. It's a rather romantic representation and the later problem was much more strategic in nature. By "romantic" I refer of course to swashbuckling chess as we used to see in the games of Spielmann and others (not that this should be seen as a game-like position!) So look for a stunning key move. I'll discuss some of its aesthetic aspects later.

This puzzle reminds me of D'Orville's puzzles.(mate in 4, from 1840, there are in my blog) Nice diverting of the Bishop, and will visible the power of Knights. This is a sightly sketch (the original). Thanks you for this post!

Yes you can even dress it up more with a longer mate and a refusal of the queen:

I see you point (number 2). And if you insist that the queen enters via h8, there has to be a black (or white) piece on f7 (e.g. black pawn). But I still insist that the white f6 pawn be placed on d5... I looks nicer there :)

The knight on f2 only guards g4 and has no other purpose, right? Why can't it be placed on h2 and let the black h-pawn disappear?

I just wanted to get rid of (what seemed to me as) superfluous pieces for the aesthetics of the starting position.

Thanks!

I always like suggestions! Please feel free to make as many as you wish, and take my comments in the spirit of chessfriendship....

In yours:

1. The set check (0. ... Bf8+) is something of a problem. It ruins the #4, which most problemists would criticize.

2. There are several duals in non main lines. 1. Qa8 Bf8+ 2. Qxf8 g4 white can access the black king several ways. In mine, he has to access via h8....

In mine, also, the "second strongest move" is 1. Qh1. Thus, there is intent to show a specific geometric pattern with the queen in real and try play. I am sure you see it!

Thanks and any further comments, feel free!

Nice sketch...

I find the following position less goofy, and all the lines are still valid (maybe it helps with your longer puzzle)

8/6K1/8/2b1Pppk/4b3/7p/4NNP1/Q7 w - - 0 1

A good sketch as it is, though
