cgs, damourax, glad you enjoyed.  :)

Regarding 11...gxf2+ 12.Rxf2 Rh1+ 13.Kxh1 Nxf2+, since I could spot that line, my guess is that Anderssen could, too. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that he knew exactly what he was doing when he played 11...Bxd4.

11...Bxd4 led to mate on the one hand, and a big advantage on the other.

11...gxf2 led to a bigger advantage.

I think he wanted the pretty win and reasoned he wasn't risking anything.

wonder how anderssen missed the simple 11...gxf2+ 12 Rxf2 Rh1+ 13 Kg1 Nxf2+. perphaps he was aiming for mate, not material.

9. d4 would have kept White out of trouble as would 11 fxg3 Nxg3 12 Re1.

For Black, how about 11... gxf2   12 Rxf2 Rh1+  13 Kxh1 Nxf2+ forking K+Q

The classic chess-games. The Mayet-Anderssen is one of them. Thank you "likeforests" for the showing. Who don't know: the 3... a7-a6 move still Morphy discovered.

LF this is too funny. I figured I would post my old annotations here so I can link to it later. I am going to write a post on my other blogg as to my study of this game to answer your earlier question to me.
