My Blitz with Bill Wall

Submitted by Graw81 on Sat, 04/05/2008 at 5:12pm.

I had the pleasure to play a very strong player (Bill Wall) on Chess Live (Beta) tonight. Bill pretty much hammered me in a game yesterday where he played the O'Kelly variation which i transposed into a kind of Kings Indian Attack (for tempo reasons). The game tonight is a pretty interesting sicilian defense in the sozin attack involving sacrifice.

At first fritz 11 doesnt like the idea of the sac but a few moves later (after best moves) he changes his mind! I think its a really interesting game which could have been really great if we were playing long time control. Towards the end i played a dubious 23.Qxf6?! but the simple 23.Rf1  would have created winning chances for me. Fritz actually evaluated the position after 23.Rf1 +/- as opposed to after 23.Qxf6?! as =/+ I tink give the time i had left though i can forgive myself. .......Now if only i could play like this all the time!!! hehe

The time control was 5 minute and no increment. Heres the game and hope you enjoy. Comments welcomed.

I looked over this game, Walsh vs Wall, and here are my comments.  The first surprise was 12.f5.  I expected 12.Kh1 or 12.h3.  My first 11 moves were all book and I have played this variation OTB and on the Internet, so felt comfortable and it took me less than a minute to get this far.  Here I played 12...e5, but thought about 12...Nxd4, then 13...e5, then decided I did not want to trade too many pieces.  Then I was expecting 13.Nxc6 Bxc6 14.Qf3 and a kingside attack.  13...Ng4 looked natural, but perhaps 13...Na5 and 14...Nc4 might be better.  15...Nb4 was aiming at a cheapo with 16...d5 and 17...Bc5.  Perhaps better is 15...Na5 and try to exchange to play Nxb3 or Nc4.  16...b6 was a waiting, safe move and prevented 17.a5.  18.Ng5 surprised me as I expected 18.Nd5 and some exchanges.  I didn't expect 19.f6 and thought the knight had to retreat.  Nor did I expect 20.Rxf6.  Now he had to prove the sac was sound and I had to defend.  After his 22.Qxh6 I had to defend from perpetual check or mate with the threat of Qg6+ and Bxf7 or Qxf7.  I played 22...Bc6 but thought about 22...Be8 and wasn't sure which was one was better.  White now played 23.Qxf6, but could have played 23.Rf1 or 23.Be6 and give me some trouble.  I now played 23...d5, threatening 24...Rxf6 since the rook is no longer pinned by the bishop.  Finally, after 25.Qf6, I played the weak 25...Kh8 but should have played 25...Rf8 and 26...Qf7.  After 25...Kh8, 26.exd5 looks good for White since 26...Qf7 fails to 27.Qh4+ and 28.Qxb4, which I missed when I played Kh8.  I only thought about 25...Kh8 26.Qh4+ Rh7 27.Qf6+ Qg7 and Black wins.

As a Muzio fool, I can't blame them, but I can certainly understand them.

"I think my 23.Qxf6?! was a panic move"

That's the nature of blitz!

I was told never to analyze a blitz game or present one up for scrutiny.  This was brought home to me one time when I was showing a Dutch friend of mine a game I played using a certain line in the Muzio gambit that we had been discussing. I had won the game in what I though was great style by sacking a piece for a mating net after 20 some moves.  After looking over the game, he told me how nice my attack was, but I could have saved myself a whole lot of trouble if I just taken advantage of "mate in 1" back on move 16.

Totally agree with you batgirl. 23.Rf1 is by far the best, even as you said; its a simple and obvious move. I think my 23.Qxf6?! was a panic move. Again tho, still a playable position afterwards. Interesting line you give too. Thanks for the feedback too. Much appreciated.

(edit to your line 29...Nxd5 incase anyone is confused)

I agree. 23.Rf1 looks a lot stonger, even at a glance, since the Rook was pinned,  while Qf6 looked too dangerous, leaving the Queen attacked once the King moved, releasing the pin.

Very beautiful game, especially at 5 min time control.

I would have liked to have seen the game played out. (maybe something like: 29...Nxd4 30.BxN  Rd8 31.c4,  etc.?) it looks pretty even to me.
