Nice Kansas Open Win

Last week, I played in the Kansas Open.  It was a strong tournament and I was the lowest rated player entered in the tournament.  In round one, I drew a 1900 player as White in the French Defense.  I allowed a strong sacrifice in round two and missed the drawing defense.  In round three, I was up two pawns and on the attack when I hung my rook in time pressure.  The fourth round featured a Maroczy Bind which led to a drawn ending.  So, I want to win the last round in order to have a decent finish.  Below is my last round game which I have

annotated.

Yeah, that was the idea.  f5 fighting for d5 followed by a kingside advance

I finally kind of get what he was trying for with 6... h6 - after 6... e5 7. Nf3 h6 is played to prevent Bg5xf6 and white grabbing more control over d5.  He was planning e5 on the next move (which he played) and anticipated a fight for the d5 square (why he played Be6), but overlooked that after f4 exf4 he's been focusing on the wrong thing (d5 instead of the newly isolated d6 pawn).

Does not taking allow f5, fighting for d5 and either kicking the bishop back to d7 or opening the a-file/trading off a temporarily bad knight?

    Nice article,

In my opinion black should have played 9. f4 - Nc6 (instead of exf4). This would have helped his development. After f5 black could have taken on b3 or retreat his Bishop to d7. Does not look well for black but it's better than the pressure and the minus in development after exf4. But maybe I overlooked something.

Congratulations for a well played game!

Agreed. h6 does very little for Black's position.

But he won't because it's not.

"I almost fell out of my chair. This move just doesn't do anything for his position. I was going to put my bishop on e3 anyways."

Yeah okay, if Anand suddenly plays this move then all of a sudden it would be sound.  lol.

This guy probably gets his rating from tactics, but here not understanding the position (!) gets him totally outplayed. Nice game.

i especially enjoyed comments like 'he should be playing something like ne5' that come without elaboration or explanation. otherwise, your comments are somewhat on-the-nose, however i do appreciate your pointing out when you make a move that is 'a very nice maneuver' (22. Bg1!). (although it should be noted that most of us realized that. clearly, this move is top-drawer. frankly, i would give it two exclamation points[!!]. i'm sure modesty prevented the author from doing so.)

you're rightfully proud to have beaten this guy (despite all of his innacuracies and outright mistakes and the fact that he 'clearly' did not understand the opening). you deserve to crow

hopefully, all your future opponents will be so easy.

I really didn't see how I was being a jerk to Will while I was writing this.  But in retrospect, I could have made different remarks.  So I apologize for being so critical.  There's probably still some harbored resentment there because he absolutely crushed me last year.

You played very well, but I thought that sometimes you were unfairly harsh in your criticism of your opponents play. Whatever. gg
