Philippine Team in 2008 Olympiad

Eugene Torre should play in the Olympiad.  He deserves it. Wesley So is not ready to play Board 1. Look at Paragua, he performed below 50% in 2006 Olympiad. The Philippines needs an experience and respectable player in Board 1.  Based on the performance of Wesley, he has difficulty playing against word class players.  He needs more experience to be able to play Board 1.

Based from the official line up, Villamayor will now play Board one and So will play Board Two. Board Two will be a good board assingnment for Wesley and I hope he will score well but I seriously doubt if Villamayor can handle Board one.  To date, I do not see anyone in the country except Torre who plays Board one well in international competitions. I am sad that he is in the Olympiad as a non-playing captain and not as a player. A Top 40 finish can be achieved but a Top 20 is a miracle!

I totally agree with you. the Philippines should not be satisfied with wins against weaker teams. But recently, the Philippines also has problems defeating weaker teams decisively. The Ncfp must not rely on one single tournament(!) to pick the members of the team.  The members should be picked based on proven track record and experience. I just hope that the Philippines do well this time but I seriously doubt if the team can finish in the Top 20.

OMG NCFP would neeed to work hard and it would take many decades before RP could become a serious contender.RP would be unfortunate if they are paired against powerhouses like China,Russia,Ukraine,Armenia and USA.NCFP hopes that Team RP be paired against weak nations to pick points and boast it in the Philippines that they made their job well done-how coward!

Yes i agree, GM Eugene Torre should be on top board not Wesley So.Russia's young GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (having won Aeroflot Open and Ordix open ahead of GM's Nakamura,Eljanov)(and much stronger than Wesley So) but Russia would not field him in Dresden Olympiad because they prefer seasoned and experienced players like Morozevich and Svidler, they will wait for him to fully mature.Manning the top board would be a tragedy for So just imagining that his ass would be kicked by Super GM's Ivanchuk,Nakamura,Wang Yue,Michael Adams,Magnus Carlsen,Morozevich,Levon Aronian etc.,for the fact that his games with black is not impressive and just rely to win with white pieces .

I dont think Antonio deserves to be in the team because his form is not good in the last two years.  His record in the Olympiad is impressive but I do not think he is in top form this year.  Paragua also has mixed results and he cannot seem to win against top opponents lately.  The line up should be:

    Bd 1: Torre

    Bd 2: So

    Bd 3: Gonzales

    Bd4: Laylo

    Bd5: Villamayor
