Pieces that can mate.

Please give you knowledgeable opinion:

In the end game where you have no pawns and you end up with only two or three pieces (or you opponent does) which combinations can get chack mate and which combinations can not get check mate.

If you reply can you start with either:

2 piece mate / 2 piece no mate

or

3 piece mate / 3 piece no mate

along with you ideas.

Regards

A rook is also sufficient material to mate, it is also achievable with two knights if the opponent has a pawn in certain instances, but don't ask me when! I note that you teach, does your School have a chess club?

What about a king and 1 piece - what combos can mate then?

    2 knights = no mate

    2 bishops = mate

    bishop + knight = mate

rook + any piece = mate

queen + any piece = mate

3 pieces will be a piece + one of the above and it will be mating material.
