Silence

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking that in real chess, the "silence is golden" rule applies, with absolute minimal banter.  I'm new to chess and naive, so I have a "new" look at silence in regards to on-line games - specifically the turn-based ones.  Not the Live! Chess or any other versions on chess.com.

My rationale is that you are not being verbal with the person.  My take is, someone can type all they like in the chat box without it affecting me personally - I won't get intimidated by 12 pitch Times New Courier font!

Your thoughts....?

you can separate the two, yes.  That's the point.  And true, without it affecting my gameplay.  I have found I enjoy the various people here...quite diverse opinions and personalities.

thinking about the separation of the two - it's like that burger mcdonald's put out a while back with the advertising slogan - "the hot stays hot...and the cool stays cool" - I think that statement fits my mindset perfectly.

Thanks for the input, Rael!  :)

I found that chess.com affected me, anyways, in the kind of manner whereby it's like "Come for the chess... stay for the people", in a sense. I know for sure that if the forums and chat box didn't exist, that I might've left the site long ago.

Initially, anyways, when one is really gung ho and serious and concentrating and all about imrpovement, it might be easy to see how chatting or what have you is a secondary thing, but I dunno, if I didn't forray the occasional hello from time to time I wouldn't have met as many intriguing human beings about the world as I have.

Heh, maybe I'm not directly addressing the thrust of your blog post, grimreaper. Do you mean that your new look on silence is that the chat doesn't infringe on it at all? You'd be right. You can easily seperate the two - have the chat on one side and the game on the other.

I don't chat in all of my games either.

"without it affecting me personally" I hope you mean "without it affecting my gameplay". A lot of the fun is that the other person can, after a while, be quite personal.
