Tactics, tactics, and more tactics!

Never been a great blogger, and will never be, but I like the idea of sharing some of my training plans and progress with the community, so I’ll give it a try!

Lately I decided that, at my level, tactics is probably the most important thing I should work on, if I want to maximize my return for the time (which unfortunately is not as much as I wished). After having looked around a lot, and following the recommendation of my coach, I have started using Chessimo (www.chessimo.com). The idea of the tool is to teach you “by doing”: you have several modules, which cover tactics, strategy, endings and openings. You start with the tactics modules (there are 6 of 51 units each, versus 3 for both strategy and endings) and the plan is to do one unit each day: in each unit, you have a combination of new problems, old problems from previous units, and a repetition of the problems from the current unit. Each position will be repeated, overall, 6 times, at which point it will be defined as “learnt”.

For the moment I am on unit 11: each unit now contains 135 problems (up from the 60 of the first units), and so far I am using a good hour to go through them. I am also regularly doing rated tactics, so to see if there is any progress.

Ultimately, I am interested in seeing if what I am doing is helping me in becoming a better tactician (which should be reflected in the graph below), and more importantly if this is reflected in my games, which of course is the ultimate target!

Dirk, many thanks for reading and asking for my opinion.

I have not reached yet the Strategy module, because I need to finish the first 3 modules of Tactics before I get there (there are 6 modules for tactics, and “only” 3 for Strategy and Endgames). From what I heard from other users, while the Tactics and Endgame modules are very helpful, the Strategy part is not at par – but again this is just what I heard, no first hand comments on that!

    All the best,

    Andrea

I have imposed myself to not add too much new material to my study plan. I'm always attracted by new material and never finished the old one.

now my plan is: tactics exercise, endgame course by silman, slow playing.. still don't know what/how to study opening

Well I see a very positive trend in there as well, Elcabesa! I suggest you give a try to this Chessimo software, there is a trial version, and could be very useful for you as well!

    this is my Chess.com trend

in september 2008 i bought the book "chess tactics for student" from Bain, and I solved all the position. They are very simple and my tactics level in chess.com rose from 1500 to 1700 with some spike up to 1900.  After april 2009 I stopped doing tactics exercises from the book because I was good at it and my rating went down ( you can see a 1200 too). Now I'm doing some other tactics exercise from an italian book, and also have started to play very slow on chess.com. I hope to become a better player. if you want, we can continue by chat or by messages in Italian :)

    otherwise we'll continue here :)

@Farbror: regarding the second part of your question (sorry I overlooked that!). It is strongly recommended not to split it, because of the way the system works: the exercises are designed to enforce patterns, and they are structured in a way to maximize the learning process. However I think if you can split half in the morning, half in the evening (i.e. not two days later!), that would still do!

Farbror, Elcabesa, thanks both for stopping bye, very appreciated!

@Farbror: the graph is actually not related to the exercises done on Chessimo (there is no concept of "ELO" there, the system tracks only the number of correct exercises you have done), but from ChessTempo, standard mode. I use Chessimo to "learn tactics", if I can say so, and ChessTempo in standard mode (no time pressure) to follow progress.

@Elcabesa: the graph is coming from ChessTempo, which is the site I use to do tactics exercises, I have downloaded the full data set of my results over the last year and created the graph with Excel.

    "The Trend is Your Friend!"

Does the software create the graphs? Do you think it would work OK to split the units in smaller segments? A 60 minute session is seldom easy to fit into my activities.

how do you create this graph? where the data come from?
