The delightful mating puzzle!

Submitted by Catalyst_Kh on Mon, 01/26/2009 at 4:43pm.

The most magnificent 2-turn mating puzzle i ever saw! It is mate at second turn - white to move, but how much joy you will have, if you will resolve this probmlem by yourself - no computer or other help, trust me - it is gorgeous! If you can't find the answer right now - try it later, you will not regrad.

Was it a race as to who shall solve it correctly?  I'm sad that I saw the solution in the comments.

This is one of the coolest puzzles I've ever seen!  I'm too embarrassed to say how long it took me to figure this out -- there's so much going on in this position that it was hard to know where to begin and how to proceed.  My head hurts.

After 1. QxR how does black prevent mate?

(nevermind, I see NxN)

Ba6 is a great move, not that difficult to see in retrospect seeing as how black's light squared bishop & a-rook are both pinned (R pinned to b5 square to protect against mate) but I got overwhelmed by the position.

That is the right solution. Gongratulations! White has 47 first moves, and after 1.Ba6 black has 32 moves in answer, but all 32 leads to mate - this is outstanding! :)

It took mi some time to solve this.

Ba6 and white is in zugzwang.Any move leads to mate.

I knew it had to be some bishop move :)

The very good try j1m1 ! You made me looking for the right black's answer for a long time! :)

After 1.Be2 black will take at c2 not with the queen! :) The 1...N:e2 would be the black's rescue, because then at 2.Nc2+ black will answer 2...Kd3! :)

So do you see how magnificent this puzzle is? It is mate only in 2 moves, but how tricky it is! From the initial position d3 is attacked twice by two white's pieces - Ne1 and Bc4, so it is so easy to miss that black king could retreat to that square! :D

So please try again!

Be2 and now bishops get in the way of defending both mating squares. 1...Qxe2 2.Rxe4# 1...c2 2.Bb2# any other move Nc2#

It would be easier for you to make it such way: always try to find the move with a check, when searching the black's answer to any your first white's move. For example, insteed of 1. fxg6 Rxa8 2. Nf5# black just may go 1... Qg4+, and for 1. Nxg2 Rxa8 2. Nb5# black will just move any other piece, not the rook a5, let it be 1... Nf2, so b5 square remain covered. :)

But you making the progress, try again, sooner or later you will found the secret. :)

"And hey, it is a great puzzle!" - to my pity i dont know who is an author of it.

Thanks for your try! But of course, black will not take the queen, and insteed of 1.Rxc5 Rxa8 2.Nxb5# black will make just any other move, for example - 2... Rxe7 with check, so mate is far away after that. :) And especially important, that you placed the pawn b3 at b2 square - that fully changes the solution, so fix that. :)

It is wrong! :D The queen can just take that knight on c2. :)
