This Human Race

Walking barefoot, through the town centre,

it's 5 in the morning,

the milkman's waking up.

On our way home he passes us,

he doesn't smile, or greet us, I think it's because-

He's been getting kind of lonely,

(he's got things on his mind).

Car needs a service,

(the passing of time).

He's worrying that, he's been left behind,

it's too late now.

(There's no re-wind)

The jogger passing by,

doesn't slow down to say 'Hi',

I wonder why? I wonder why?

As I wander...

There's a cat in the bushes,

(outside of our house).

He's got his paw pinned,

firmly on the tail of a mouse.

Occassionally,

he will let her go,

she tries to run but she's just too slow.

Our dog sees' it all from,

up at his high window,

like a kid with popcorn,

watching a film show.

Life and death on this (A Minor) scale,

that's the end of her tale.

The jogger running by,

he never slows down to say 'Hi',

I wonder why? I wonder why?

As I wander-

I bet you're thinking,

you've heard all this before.

Our ordinary lives.

(Who could want more?)

Met disappointment.

(I showed him the door)

Cos life is short.

(That's for sure.)

This is no other,

species quite like us,

maybe black ants,

(living in the dust)

exploring, fighting

(in their colonies)

Tiny, dis-functional

families...

We join this human race-

at a walking pace.

So much to see,

so much to be,

slow down.

I like the feeling of verisimilitude in your words (been dying to use that word for ages!).  And the way they come from the heart

that reminds me of reading poetry all the time back in--when was it?--1997.  Haven't looked at any in like a year now, so thanks.

(I remember thinking Wordsworth was a doof and preferring Blake.  But mostly it's a blur.)

Depressing, but good!  Of course, you also know that a smile can be contagious, right?  Now if only I could say that in a poem!
