Week Report No 6

Submitted by LydiaBlonde on Sat, 06/07/2008 at 3:05am.

In the first four weeks here, I played a lot. Then I concluded that I must to reduce my time spent at chess.com, for it start to ruined my other activities. I need not to use more then 5-6 haurs per day. (uuups - I meant per week!!! What a mistake I made! Surprised)

I concluded three games this week, making one win and two draws (both agaist oponents >2100 rating). My rating arised for 16 points, to 2067. Not so far from 2100, what is my next goal! Cool(However, I was uncreful and husty in some games...)

I concluded all 8 games at the first round of the French Defence Open Tournament, with 100% sucess. All games in my group are concluded in only three weeks, and now me and alfiloski are waiting other groups to finish, and to start the second round.

It is interesting that five of us had ratings around 2000, 1800, 1600, 1400, 1200. We played 20 games, and only in one a player with lower rating won. It show that rating realy means something!

If I remember correctly, a difference of 200 points in elo-system means that the stornger need to win 75%, i.e., of two games, let to say, win as white and draw s black. In Glicko system is similar, I think. So, we can say, a range of 200 points is one "class", "level" of power. At the world, the best OTK players have around 2800 elo-rating, so top class are 2600+. Here, the best have around 2500. So, "class A" are 2300+, and I am "class C", not so far from B! Smart me! Smile

My result agaist various levesls of oponents:

total             #63 +47-7=9
2300+           # 2  + 0-1=1
2100-2299    # 2  + 0-0=2
1900-2099    # 8  + 2-3=3
1700-1899    #19 +15-1=3
<1700          #32  +30-2=0

I play 10 rated games at the moment: five in the 2nd Chess.com Tournament (1801-2000) (I won ther first three games), and six free games. As I search oponents with higher rating, an average rating of five oponents is 2177.

I am no more so good in tactic trainer.  The fall to only 2100 points. Frown

@ChessTrainor : I am not a writer, but journalist. I work for a newspaper. I write poems from time to time, but I am not very good in it!

backtracking to "seventh seal" and chess:

well in the seventh seal this bloke declares he will defeat Death with the help of a bishop and  knight - and [though Death in the film is white] there is the black death thing :

did Bergman make a pun on the K+B+N v K ending?

also: marilyn monroe was a talented chess player, but she was too disturbed a person to focus and learn at least some non-beginner chess stuff systematically  - so you wont find her rating anywhere.

PS: it looks like i am in the middle of class D, hoping to enter class C some day :(

On a related note to the conversation about the "The Seventh Seal", I was surprised to learn recently that Humphrey Bogart was a strong chess player and enthusiast of the game who often had chess scenes written into his scripts.  The most famous of which is the classic scene in Casablanca where Sam is seen drinking over a chess board.

A rough estimate of his playing ability is that he'd probably be rated somewhere around the 2100 mark.  Irrespective of his rating, he was strong enough to earn a draw against 6-time US Chess Champion, GM Samuel Reshevsky, in a simul exhibition.

My favourite Bergman film is "the silence". The most happy - or least unhappy - Bergman film is "wild strawberries" ?

Yes, it's true what you said about tactic trainer. We can see it's a good organised tool, with realistic system of points. My real power is around 2100-2200, yours is more. I will see, can I improve it. And it's normal that the young GM is the best. I asked Aoxoxmoxoa once for his enormous success and he recognise he use a program in tactich treiner.

About "The Seventh Seal": I sow it few years ago. So dark! I didn't realy like it, but I. Bergman is undaubdfully a great artist!

From my experience with the Tactics Trainer, the problems really seemed to take a big leap in overall difficulty at around the 2300 rating level.  I can solve very few complete problems past that level, though I can often find the first or second move, some of the problems with 5-7 moves seem impossibly hard.  I guess that's the rating system in action though isn't it?  It's telling, I think, that many of the highest rated Tactics Trainer players are titled players, with a GM and FM occupying two of the highest rankings.  As the problems become more and more esoteric, the class difference between the professionals and we 'mortals' starts to really show.

What I find most interesting is that there are very few highly ranked players who have a Tactics Trainer rating that's anywhere near their online chess rating.  When I look at the top 50 Tactics Trainer players, I see very few names that I recognize other than the titled players.  Very few.  I guess since most of the top players here are not Premium Members (which is shameful) they don't spend much time using the Tactics Trainer.

p.s. I love "The Seventh Seal".  I have a large poster of the pic you used for this blog post in my study.
