WW Analyzes #2

This was from the 4th round of a recent 5-round tournament I played OTB. Both my opponent and I had lost one game (to the same incredibly-underrated kid) and won 2, and we both fairly well needed a win to be in decent contention. With that in mind, here's the game (I played black)
The biggest lessons which can be drawn from this game are to not relax too much and go on autopilot once you've achieved a good position and to keep fighting when you're behind - both of these principles are on display from both players in this game.

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Actually, my memory wasn't a factor so much. I've hardly studied those lines at all (it's one of the bigger holes in my repertoire, as I also don't see the Torre Attack too often), and I was improvising OTB. Fortunately, my opponent didn't seem to know the lines too well either - i.e. playing 6.Nbd2 instead of what I now know to be the main continuation of 6.Nc3. Apparently black scores quite well in these lines (better than white by a somewhat significant margin, though I don't have Elo ratings in front of me on the quick check I just did), but  I didn't like my position too well after say move 5, and only thought I was doing well a bit later. Basically I was just relying on general positional principles, and I think I flatly outplayed my opponent slightly through 17 moves.

Actually, my 36th move wasn't all that great - from what I can tell, it was the same, with best play, as taking the knight right away; I simply preferred taking b2 first to limit white's options very slightly and win instantly in the very very very unlikely event that my opponent missed the back rank mate.

Wow! I am seeing the Torre Attack after a long time!

You must have phenomenal memory to be able to play the Classical Defense, Nimzowitsch Variation in OTB!

your 36th move was fantastic (it took a moment for me to understand - I thought "duh?"

    nice and exciting finish
