And We're Live... with Tournaments!

Today we are super-thrilled to announce that one of our most anticipated features ever is finally available for all members: Live Chess Tournaments are here!!

Play in rating-specific or open sections, with your choice of 6 time-control formats (ranging from the crazy-fast 1|0 up to the relatively civilized 15|10). New tournaments start every 10 minutes, all day long! These are Swiss-style events with no elimination, so there's plenty of play. Feel your heart race as you compete in real time for glory - and trophies!

The short how-to?... Log into Live Chess, and find a new "Tournaments" tab, next to "New Game" above the Seek Graph. (Start times are based on your own computer's clock for accuracy!) Register by clicking "Join" - or clicking on the tournament name. Take it from there!

Need more detail? Check out the new FAQ article in Help!

We've still got a lot of good Live tournament stuff on the way - including the addition of pages to show your your past tournaments, leaderboards, etc.; an easy way to observe tournaments without joining; other formats (maybe), and so on.

Until then, & until next time... Game On!  :D

Thank you very much but I wish I could get more than 2 tournaments per week even without premium membership! or at least more than 2 tournaments per day with gold membership!

Very fun experience to play in a tournament and it's nicely done. I'm really fond of being able to obs other players in the tourney. Makes me feel like I'm in a room with them and after my game finishes I stand up to watch others.

Sad that it's only 2 tournies for us free users. Pitty.

When does the week reset? Which day?

@andrewhoyer if I am not mistaken it only becomes impossible to have more rounds in a swiss system when everybody has played everybody else (that includes bye), so thats not the reason, at least not for my last tournament.

this is dumb because basic members can only play 2 tournaments per week, apart from that... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To those wondering why their tournament ended before all the rounds were complete:  I don't have a definite answer, but from what I have seen, as the tournament progresses, often half of the players withdraw.  My guess is that if it reaches a level where it is no longer feasible (or even possible, in a Swiss system) to play all the rounds, the tournament ends early.

Why are tournaments shorter than what they are supposed to be? My last one lasted only 5 rounds (bullet 2|1), and there were enough players, so it wasn't that there were only 6 players.

Congratulations! I'll pass the word along. When will we be able to create our own live tournaments? I'd like to organize live tournaments at work - similar to how I organize our "online" tournaments... :-)

@symbolic: then buy a membership!  29 bucks for a year of gold membership =  55 cents a week for gold membership, and you get two tournaments a day with the gold membership.  so, 14 live tournaments a week...and if you ONLY did live tournaments, that comes out to 4 cents per tournament.  Compare this with the going rate of between 10 and 30 bucks for a tourney over the board.  this seems reasonable to me!

This is a great idea thank you chess.com. but tournaments limit for the basic player is very merciless. 2 tournaments a week rule is very bad rule in my opinion. There are too many basic member on this site area. If we rule this, many many player will be out of those tournaments and it gonna getting boring. i don't like this rule. maybe 5 tournaments a week would be merciful. We need to highly consider that!

I played in a tournament with 2 1 time control which is supposed to be 7 rounds. There were over 60 players in it but only 6 rounds, does anyone know why this is?
