Third Blog - Greeters

Submitted by xbigboy on Sun, 04/13/2008 at 3:32pm.

I have played numerous greeter games, and only Lucid has actually returned and played on. I don't learn much, but I learned that the crazy situation of being forced to play, and not have been used to the format, is odd for newbies.

Many people asked

  • Are you a computer?
  • What are ratings?
  • Do I have to wait 3 days until I make a move?
  • Seriously, am I playing a computer?
    etc.

I don't think that the greeter thing is working. Please comment.

I have been a greeter too. I find some newbies just don't know how to manuver around, some don't speak/read English so they are at a great disadvantage.  Many do not make any moves and those I usually abort before they time out, and some players make a couple of moves and don't return.  However out of 200 plus greeter games I have played and greeted many good players, some that were interesting, but knew little about playing chess, then others who challenged me a game after the greeter game.   The concept of greeter games is a good one, but I agree, the program needs some tweaking.

Being a Chess.com greeter is a nice concept, but could use some revamping. Challenging newcomers to a game the instant they join as part of the greeting is a bit tacky...especially when people have to first familiarize themselves with the site (features, navigating, etc.).

Some people probably don't mind this 'in your face' approach; but I equate this with the annoying 'hawkish' sales person at a store...or a gnat. Give the people their space and let them decide when they want to play. Just simply greet the people with a gentle automated personal welcome message (if the feature is available) to clue people in to the fact that you're not a computer, and let them know that you're available for challenges, chatting, and to assist them in becoming more familiar with the site.

I just posted a thread in the forums asking why a lot of newcomers don't return..

And i get asked points 2 and 3 on your list aswell. .. As soon as people find out they have 3 days in which to move, they log off and don't come back.. Frown

Well I don't play unrated games to greet people so I really don't know what...

Although it is normal for them to have questions because they are new to this.

What I would recommend is stop them first of and ask them if they have any Q's.

It is normal for a new player to not even come back for some reason...

I hope this answered your Greeter thing, from ADK.
