Yesterday, something weird happened to me. Not remarkable, and not earth-shaking, but a strange coincidence none the less. Believe it or not, this is really how it occurred.....
To start, I must go back to Wednesday 30th November last year, 2011. On this day a national free to air channel in my country (BBC FOUR) was screening a programme called 'Fischer - Genius and Madman'.
I thought, "Great. This was shown before, but I missed it. Not this time!" You may have seen this programme before which documents the life of Bobby Fischer in chess and beyond (if not try to watch it). I had not seen it and this remained true as every time I looked on my TV's list of programmes recorded to watch, I remembered I hadn't watched it, but then never seemed to find a spare 90 minutes needed to watch it. December, Christmas, New Year all past and still this Fischer biopic remained unwatched.
Then, 2 days ago, Monday, I had two hours before I needed to go out - more than enough time to watch the hour and a half film, or so you would think. One distraction/interruption after another meant that after two hours there was still 15 minutes left to watch. "Oh well," I thought, "I'll watch it later, tonight sometime," but I didn't. So the next day, Tuesday, yesterday, I made a coffee, and sat to watch the conclusion.
Right at the end, it depicted the sad passing of Mr. Fischer, which I knew had happened, several years ago I thought, but no... It was on
17th January 2008
exactly 3 years ago to the day as I was watching the programme. I felt a shiver down my spine..... or as the saying goes like someone was walking over my grave.
VERY spooky !
It had been nearly seven weeks since I had made the recording, and I could've watched it at any time since then, and also it could've easily happened that I watched all of the programme the day before, but as I said above, I tried to but couldn't.
I know it means nothing, I just thought I'd share this with you in a chess anecdote type of way.
Thanks for reading, good luck, & good chess.
r.i.p. Mr. Bobby Fischer (9th March 1943 - 17th January 2008)
