Opening Theory 101

When we learn any given thing, we have to start at the beginning. In reading, it's A-B-C. In math, it's 1-2-3. In singing, it's Do - Ra - Mi. And before we launch into a showtune, well, you get the picture.

Chess is no different. We have to start at the beginning.

There are 4 points to ponder for our opening moves. They are:

Center. The player who controls the center of the board has the advantage.

Development. Developing a plan of attack; getting your pieces working instead of sitting on your first rank.This needs to be done as quickly as possible.

Coordination. Your pieces need to be working together.

Mobility. Your pieces need to be able to move. If they are stuck on a few squares of the playing board, they're not doing much for you. They need to be able to move to where they can help you win the game.
